Jase closed the window after Koda took to the skies. They had gathered their supplies to set out for the fence line closest to the station. Jase was to start there and work in one direction until he reached the next station along the preserve edge. With the wolf attack still lingering in his mind, Jase decided to take the gun and tranquilizer darts as well.
Once Koda had checked the surrounding area for animals and given Jase the all clear, Jase set out toward the fence on foot. There would be a long hike back at the end of the day, but if they paced themselves right, it would be doable.
It’s rare to find a preserve that marks its edges with anything other than a sign on a tree, but the Strays Preserve was intended as a wildlife refuge for wolves that might not survive otherwise. Many of the wolves here had some disability that made them the prey outside the property boundary. The disabled animals provided a believable reason for the fence line and gave the shifters the sanctuary they craved.
Jase pulled his radio from his belt and called to base.
“Base, do you copy?”
“This is base. Izaak speaking. Go ahead.”
“Hey, Izaak. It’s Jase at station fifteen. I’m at the fence line and calling in. I’m going to mark my start point as requested. Calling to notify you of our location.”
“Has avian shifter fifteen—”
“Koda. The avian shifter has a name.”
“Sure, whatever. I don’t need to learn their names.”
“You need to learn his. He’s my mate! Jase, out!”
Jase cut his connection with the base and turned the radio off completely. He would check back once he had cooled down, and maybe ask to speak to Noah or Deacon instead. Jase didn’t like the attitude that Izaak was showing. The bird shifters were helping the wolves and deserved to be individuals, not station numbers. Jase was sure if Ben found out he would shit bricks.
Jase grabbed the fence and pulled. It shook but stayed lodged in place. Jase began his visual, looking for marks or repairs that weren’t documented. Running his hand along the chain link, he felt for catches. Anything out of the ordinary, paint, nicks, scratches, excessive rust was all logged so patterns might be found.
Koda flew down and perched on the top of the fence. Jase gazed up at his mate. “I still think you’re beautiful.”
Koda cawed back.
“Aww, you say the sweetest things. You really think my eyes shimmer like emeralds?”
Koda’s whole body shook like he took bad-tasting medicine.
“You know I can’t understand you as a bird, so I hear what I want to hear.”
Koda chirped and squawked.
“Koda! Right here, right now? You animal!”
Koda shook his head and flew away. Jase laughed as he moved along the fence line. He walked the short space he had traveled and stared at the bottom of the fence looking for tracks or freshly dug dirt. Although he was having fun teasing his mate, he had a job to do, and he would do it well.
